Consequences of Bedsore Injuries

Also called pressure sores and decubitus ulcers, bedsores occur when patients are left in one position for long periods. The continual pressure leads to poor circulation, causing skin and tissue to break down on body parts such as:

  • Hips
  • Buttocks
  • The lower back
  • Calves
  • Heels
  • The backs of arms

Bedsores begin as a skin irritation with redness and loss of skin layers. If the sores are allowed to fester, additional layers of skin may be lost and tissue will be exposed. In the most serious cases, the tissue also wears away, leaving muscle or bone exposed.

In addition to extreme pain, bedsores leave the patient susceptible to infection, especially if substandard care subjects them to contact with moisture, urine or feces. Infection can lead to gangrene, amputation, cancer of the scar tissue, sepsis or wrongful death.
